Éste fin de semana en la Iglesia del Redentor, voy a concluir nuestra serie de mensajes “La Manera de Adorar.” Ha sido muy bueno el aprender y refrescar nuestros corazones en los principios y practicas de la adoración.  Si te perdiste alguno de los mensajes en la serie, asegúrate de adquirir una copia en nuestro Centro de Recursos en el Lobby de la iglesia.  En el mensaje final, estaré hablando acerca de “Caminando en Adoración.” ¡No te lo pierdas!

I am also very excited about a new message series I will begin next weekend, September 11, 12 titled “Old School Values In A New School World.”

We will be studying the 10 Commandments and the key values that undergird each of them.  We will see how God blesses us when His values become our values.

¿Qué clase de impresión dejas en otros?

Cuando era un adolescente, aprendí algo acerca de impresiones.  Por muchos años yo tuve interés en manualidades con cuero.  Compré un juego de herramientas y selladores para marcar cuero y mostré un poco de creatividad haciendo una variedad de cosas como cinturones,  correas para guitarras y pulseras.  Utilizando las herramientas y los selladores con el martillo apropiado, podía imprimir y marcar ciertos diseños, nombres y frases en el cuero mojado.

Muy pronto descubrí que una vez golpeado con el martillo, el cuero queda marcado permanentemente.  No hay segundas oportunidades o cambios.  La marca que se hace es la impresión que quedará.  Sin tener que decírselos, desperdicie mucho cuero en las primeras etapas de mi entretenimiento.  Con el tiempo aprendí a ser más cuidadoso con el uso de las herramientas.   Con mucho cuidado, los errores y desperdicios se redujeron bastante y ¡mis esfuerzos de hecho me produjeron un poco de dinero para usar mientras estudiaba en la Universidad!

¿Qué tiene que ver ésta historia con mi vida ahora? ¡Mucho!

Cada día, nos demos cuenta o no, dejamos impresiones en otros.  El Apóstol Pablo nos recordó esto:

“…sé ejemplo de los fieles en la forma en que hablas y vives, en el amor, en la fe y en la pureza.” – 1 Timoteo 4:12 (NBD)

La palabra Griega que usó Pablo para “ejemplo” es muy instructiva.  Es una palabra que quiere decir “una marca, huella o impresión.”

A través de palabras y patrones de nuestra vida dejamos una huella en otros – dejamos marcas o impresiones en sus vidas.  Podemos dejar marcas con algo bueno o algo malvado.  Y muchas veces, cualquier impresión que dejamos en alguien durará – no hay oportunidades para volver a hacerlas.  Si lo hacemos mal, si golpeamos de manera equivocada, talvez no tengamos la  oportunidad de corregir nuestro error.  Yo estoy seguro de que usted, al igual que yo, anhelamos tener una oportunidad para corregir un comentario que hicimos, una actitud que mostramos, o un mal ejemplo que dimos, pero no pudimos.

Pablo uso tres palabras para describir la manera en la que Dios quiere que impresionemos a otros.  Debemos marcarlos con nuestro:

• Amor.
• Fe.
• Pureza.

Cuando las personas se relacionen con nosotros, deberían de irse marcados con la manera en que amamos a Dios y a las personas, la profundidad de nuestra fe sincera, y la pureza moral e integridad de nuestro carácter.  Éstas son las marcas que debemos dejar en nuestro caminar – impresiones de las que no nos arrepintamos y oportunidades que nunca desperdiciamos.

¿Y tu? ¿Qué impresiones estas dejando en otros? ¿Cuando las personas se encuentran contigo, son marcadas con tu amor, fe y pureza?

¡Tomemos la decisión de hacer todo lo que esté de nuestra parte, confiando en la gracia de Dios y el poder en nosotros, para dejar una buena impresión en las personas que Él coloca en nuestras vidas!

¿Qué te está afligiendo?

Las aflicciones son parte de la vida.  Es algo que todos experimentamos.  No importa que tan perfecta la vida de alguien pareciera por fuera, todos han tenido aflicciones personales – aflicciones que la fama, fortuna o los amigos no pueden arreglar.

Las aflicciones vienen de muchas maneras diferentes.  Nuestros corazones y nuestra mente se ponen ansiosos, perturbados y agitados por muchas cosas.  Hay aflicciones en nuestras relaciones, en nuestras finanzas, en nuestra salud – y la lista sigue y sigue.

El ser un Cristiano creyente no nos libra de estas cosas.  Son parte de la vida.  Observe lo que Jesús dijo acerca de lo inevitable de las aflicciones:

“… En este mundo afrontarán aflicciones…” – Juan 16:33 (NVI)

La diferencia entre un Cristiano creyente y alguien que no es creyente no se encuentra en la presencia o ausencia de aflicciones en su vida, pero en cómo respondemos a ellas.

Jesús nos enseñó que, si bien es cierto tendremos aflicciones, no debemos preocuparnos.  ¡Las aflicciones no quieren decir que tenemos que estar afligidos!

Jesús enfatizó la diferencia entre las aflicciones que enfrentamos y la manera en la que debemos manejarlas.  Él nos mostró que, aunque las aflicciones son inevitables, el estar afligido no debe ser.  Podemos escoger otro camino – el camino de la confianza y la paz:

“No se angustien. Confíen en Dios, y confíen también en mí.” – Juan 14:1 (NVI)

“La paz les dejo; mi paz les doy. Yo no se la doy a ustedes como la da el mundo. No se angustien ni se acobarden.” – Juan 14:27 (NVI)

Entonces, ¿cómo enfrentamos las aflicciones sin estar afligidos? ¡Debemos hacer lo correcto con ellas!

El salmista nos dio la receta para tratar con las aflicciones:

“En mi angustia, supliqué a Dios y me respondió.” – Salmos 120:1 (NBD)

Cuando enfrentamos aflicciones nuestra tendencia es de cargar con ellas, preocuparnos y angustiarnos.  O, se las llevamos a otros, esperando encontrar una fuente de ayuda.  El salmista nos provee otra alternativa.  En sus experiencias personales de la vida él aprendió que lo mejor que podemos hacer cuando llegan las aflicciones es primero llevárselas a Dios.

¿Qué te está afligiendo hoy?  En lugar de usar tu energía en preocuparte, angustiarte y temer, lleva tus aflicciones a Dios.  Suplícale a Él.  Pon tu confianza en Él.  ¡Hay una respuesta esperando por ti!

As a teenager, I learned something about impressions.  For several years I had an interest in crafting leather goods.  I bought a set of leather sculpting tools and stamps and expressed a bit of creativity making a variety of items like belts, guitar straps and wrist bands.  Using the tools and striking the stamps with the proper hammer, I would imprint and impress certain designs, names and phrases on the wet leather.

I soon discovered that once struck, the leather is permanently marked.  There are no second chances or changes.  The impression that is made is the impression that lasts.  Needless to say, I wasted lots of leather in the early stages of my craft.  Over time I became much more careful with the use of my tools.  With greater care, the mistakes and waste significantly decreased and my efforts actually made me a little spending money during college!

What does this story have to do with your life now?  Lots!

Every day, whether we realize it or not, we make impressions on others.  The Apostle Paul reminded us of this:

” … Be an example to all believers in what you say, in the way you live, in your love, your faith, and your purity.”  –  1 Timothy 4:12 (NLT)

The Greek word Paul used for “example” is very instructive.  It is a word meaning “a mark, print or impression.”

Through our words and life patterns we make an impression on others — we leave marks or prints on their lives.  We can imprint them for good or evil.  And many times, whatever impression we make on someone lasts — there are no opportunities for re-do’s.  If we get it wrong, if we strike them the wrong way, we may not have an opportunity to correct the mistake.  I am sure that you, like me, have longed for a chance to change a comment made, an attitude exhibited, or an bad example set, but couldn’t.

Paul used three words to describe the way God wants us to impress others.  We are to mark them with our:

• Love.

• Faith.

• Purity.

When people interact with us, they should walk away impressed with the way we love God and people, the depth and sincerity of our faith, and the moral purity and integrity of our character.  These are the prints we want to leave behind — impressions that we never regret and opportunities that we never waste.

How about you?  What marks are you making on others?  When people encounter you are they impressed with your love, faith and purity?

Let’s decide to do everything possible, trusting in God’s grace and power in us, to make a good impression on the people He places in our lives!

Trouble is a part of life.  It’s something everyone experiences.  No matter how perfect someone’s life looks from the outside, everybody has their personal troubles — troubles that fame, fortune or friends can’t fix.

Trouble comes in many different forms.  Our hearts and minds can become anxious, disturbed and agitated by lots of things.  There are relationship troubles, financial troubles, health troubles —  the list goes on and on.

Being a Christian believer doesn’t insulate us from these things.  They’re a part of life.  Take a look at what Jesus said about the inevitability of troubles:

” … In this world you will have trouble … ” – John 16:33 (NIV)

The difference between a Christian believer and an unbeliever is not found in the presence or absence of trouble in their lives, but in how they respond to it.

Jesus taught us that, while we will have trouble, we need not be troubled.  Trouble doesn’t mean that you have to be troubled!

Jesus emphasized the difference between the troubles we face and the way we are called to handle them.  He showed us that, although trouble is inevitable, being troubled isn’t.  We can choose another path — the path of trust and peace:

“Do not let your hearts be troubled.  Trust in God, trust also in me.” – John 14:1 (NIV)

“Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you … Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” – John 14:27 (NIV)

So how do we go through troubles without being troubled? We must do the right thing with them!

The psalmist gave us the prescription for dealing with our troubles:

“I took my troubles to the Lord; I cried out to him, and he answered my prayer.” – Psalm 120:1 (NLT)

When facing troubles our tendency is to take them upon ourselves by worrying and fretting over them.  Or we take them to others, hoping to find a source of help.  The psalmist provided us with another alternative.  From personal life experience he learned that the best thing to do when trouble came his way was to first take them to God.

What’s troubling you today?  Instead of using your energy in worry, fretting and fear, take your troubles to God.  Cry out to Him.  Put your trust in Him.  There’s an answer waiting for you!

Detrás de los grandes logros, que las organizaciones y movimientos alcanzan están los desconocidos, los héroes – grandes colaboradores.  Estos “gigantes silenciosos” trabajan en lugares desconocidos, ayudando y sirviendo a otros con un compromiso incansable e inconmovible por alcanzar la misión.  Nada importante ocurre sin estos colaboradores.

No hay duda de que uno de los más respetados y productivos lideres de la primer década en la iglesia fue el Apóstol Pablo.  Sus múltiples viajes misioneros produjeron la fundación de muchas Iglesias.  Inspirado por el Espíritu Santo, ¡Pablo escribió no menos de 13 de los 27 libros del Nuevo Testamento!

Su estatura, caracter, sabiduria, resistencia y tenacidad espiritual son un modelo para todos los creyentes.  Pero Pablo reconocio la importancia de sus colaboradores en el ministerio.  El no hubiese podido hacer lo que hizo sin la ayuda de personas como Timoteo, Tito, Silas, Epafras, Aristarco, y muchos otros.

Al final de las cartas de Pablo a los creyentes de Colosa, él escribió acerca de algunos de ellos.  Él comenzó su reconocimiento con una nota pequeña acerca de un hombre llamado Tíquico.  Vea lo que Pablo tenia que decir de él:

“… nuestro muy amado hermano… Él es muy trabajador y sirve al Señor conmigo.” – Colosenses 4:7 (NBD)

Ésta corta presentación nos dice mucho acerca de un hombre que de otra manera no se hubiese sabido nada. Tíquico fue:

• “Amado” por Pablo. Había algo acerca de éste hombre que emanaba amor y que hizo que la gente lo amara a él.  Él era un hombre al que se le amaba.  Él se comportaba de maneras y demostraba actitudes que lo hacían fácil de amar.

• Un “ayudador fiel” para Pablo. La palabra Griega usada para “fiel” quiere decir “digno de créele, confiarle o confianza.” Tíquico nunca defraudó a Pablo.  Él fue un hombre con el que Pablo podía contar, y un hombre con el que Pablo contó.  La palabra Griega para “ayudador” es la que se usa básicamente para decir “servidor.” Era usada para describir a alguien que servia de manera práctica, y alguien que buscaba activamente oportunidades para ser de ayuda a otros.

• Un hombre que continuó sirviendo con Pablo. Pablo dijo de Tíquico, “Él es un hermano amado… que SIRVE conmigo en la obra del Señor.” “Servir” habla de una acción continua.  Era algo que Tíquico hacia y seguía haciendo.  La adversidad del encarcelamiento de Pablo en Roma por predicar el Evangelio no le desanimo o disminuyó el servicio que éste hombre hacia para la obra del Señor.  Él continuo sirviendo.  Pablo sabia que podía contar con él!

¿Qué lecciones podemos aprender del ejemplo de este “amado y fiel hermano colaborador” del Apóstol Pablo?  Una lección es la de ¡comprender el valor, significado y gran importancia para el Reino de los colaboradores!

Si bien es cierto que muy pocas personas se levantan a ser de la prominencia del Apóstol Pablo, todos podemos ser como Tíquico.  Todos podemos aprender a ser “¡amados hermanos/hermanas fieles colaboradores que sirven!”

Behind the greatest accomplishments. organizations and movements are relatively unknown, unsung heroes — great helpers.  These “quiet giants” work in the unnoticed places, supporting and serving others with an untiring and undeterred commitment to the mission.  Nothing ever happens of any significance without such helpers.

There is no doubt that one of the most respected and fruitful leaders of the first century church was the Apostle Paul.  His multiple missionary journeys resulted in many church plants.  Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Paul penned no less than 13 of the 27 books of the New Testament!  His spiritual stature, character, wisdom, endurance and tenacity are a model to all believers.  But Paul acknowledged the importance of helpers in his ministry.  He could not have done what he did without people like, Timothy, Titus, Silas, Epaphras, Aristarchus, and many others.

At the end of Paul’s letter to the believers at Colosse, he wrote about some of these folks.  He started his acknowledgements with a short note about a man named Tychicus.  Take a look at what Paul had to say about him:

” … He is a beloved brother and faithful helper who serves with me in the Lord’s work.”  –  Colossians 4:7 (NLT)

This brief statement tells us a lot about a man that we otherwise know very little about.  Tychicus was:

• “Beloved” by Paul. There was something about this man that exuded love and that caused people to love him.  He was a lovable man.  He behaved in ways and demonstrated attitudes that made it easy to love him.

• A “faithful helper” to Paul. The Greek word used for “faithful” means “worthy of belief, trust or confidence.” Tychicus never let Paul down.  He was a man Paul could count on, and a man that Paul did count on.  The Greek word for “helper” is one that basically means “servant.” It was used to describe someone who served practically, and one who proactively pursued opportunities to be a help to others.

• A man who continued in service with Paul. Paul said of Tychicus, “He is a beloved brother … who SERVES with me in the Lord’s work.” “Serves” speaks of a continuing action.  It was something Tychichus had been doing and continued to do.  The adversity of Paul’s incarceration in Rome for preaching the Gospel had not discouraged or diminished this man’s service in the Lord’s work.  He continued in service.  Paul knew he could count on him!

What lessons can we learn from the example of this “beloved brother and faithful helper” to the Apostle Paul?  One lesson is to understand the value, significance, and great importance of Kingdom Helpers!  While very few people rise to the prominence of the Apostle Paul, we can all be like Tychicus.  We can all learn to be “a beloved brother/sister and faithful helper who serves!”

¿Qué clase de desastre dejas con tu lengua?  ¿Qué tamaño de turbulencia dejas con tus palabras?

El diccionario define la “turbulencia” como “un reguero de perturbación dejado por algo.” Es el desastre que dejamos cuando hemos pasado por un lugar, situación o participado en una conversación en particular.

Nada crea más holas turbulentas y peligrosas en la vida de otras personas como nuestras palabras.  Palabras de enojo, insultantes, degradantes, palabras insinuantes, groseras, palabras de juicio, criticonas, comentarios entre dientes y sarcásticos, palabras sensuales, insinuadoras, chismosas, profanas, malas palabras, conversaciones que se vuelven enfermizas y palabras similares – todas estas tienen un impacto horrible y destructivo que va más allá de lo que nos imaginamos.

La Biblia es muy clara acerca de lo demoniaco, de la naturaleza infernal de una lengua sin disciplina:

“… la lengua es un fuego. Es un mundo de maldad puesto en nuestro cuerpo, que contamina a toda la persona. Está encendida por el infierno mismo, y a su vez hace arder todo el curso de la vida.” – Santiago 3:6 (DHH)

¿Cuánto daño estas ocasionando a diario con tus palabras? ¿Cuantos corazones están heridos, cuanta productividad se a perdido, cuantas relaciones están destruidas, cuando conflicto y disensión fue comenzado y alimentado, cuanto potencial se ha perdido, todo porque hemos fallado en dominar una lengua indomable?

El Apóstol Pablo quiso ayudarnos a evitar esas olas destructivas que salen de nuestras palabras.  Inspirado por el Espíritu Santo, él dio una instrucción por la que debemos vivir para evitarnos mucho dolor y guardarnos de generar una terrible turbulencia con nuestra lengua.  Observa lo que él tenia que decir:

“Su conversación debe ser siempre agradable y de buen gusto, y deben saber también cómo contestar a cada uno.” – Colosenses 4:6 (DHH)

“Se cortes en tus conversaciones.  La meta es de obtener lo mejor en otros en una conversación, no para hacerlos sentir mal, no para interrumpirlos.”  Colosenses 4:6 (Traducido)

Piensa en lo que dejas atrás con tus palabras.  Toma la decisión de que tus comentarios y conversaciones con los demás siempre serán agradables.  Determina que, en lugar de dejar un camino de turbulencia con tu lengua, ¡dejaras bendición!

The dictionary defines a “wake” as “a trail of disturbance left by the passage of something.” It is the potential turbulence we leave behind when we have passed through a place, situation or engaged in a particular interaction.

Nothing causes more unsettling and dangerous wakes in other people’s lives than our words.  Angry words, insulting, demeaning words, insinuating words, unkind words, words of judgment, critical words, side and snide comments, sensuous, flirtatious words, gossipy words, profane, dirty words, chats that become unhealthy chatter, and the like — these have a horrible and destructive impact far beyond what we can imagine.

The Bible is very clear about the demonic, hellish nature of an untamed, undisciplined tongue:

” … the tongue is a small thing … But a tiny spark can set a great forest on fire.  And the tongue is a flame of fire.  It is a whole world of wickedness, corrupting your entire body.  It can set your whole body on fire, for it is set on fire by hell itself.”  –  James 3:6, 7 (NLT)

How much damage is done every day by words?  How many hearts are broken, how much productivity is lost, how many relationships are scarred, how much conflict and dissension is ignited and fueled, how much potential is robbed, all because we fail to rein in an unruly tongue?

The Apostle Paul wanted to help us avoid such destructive wakes that come from our words.  Inspired by the Holy Spirit, he gave us a simple instruction to live by that will save us from a lot of pain and keep us from generating terrible turbulence with our tongues.  Take a look at what he had to say:

“Let your conversation be gracious and attractive so that you will have the right response for everyone.”  – Colossians 4:6 (NLT)

“Be gracious in your speech.  The goal is to bring out the best in others in a conversation, not put them down, not cut them out.”  – Colossians 4:6 (Msg)

Think about the wake left behind by your words.  Make a decision that your comments and conversations with others will always be gracious.  Determine that, instead of leaving a trail of turbulence, you will pave a pathway of blessing with your words!
