Making Better Decisions

Would you like to improve the quality of your life?  Here’s how: Make better decisions!

DecisionsThe way to make better decisions is by becoming a wiser person.  Look at what the Bible says about this:

“Wisdom is supreme; therefore get wisdom. Though it cost all you have, get understanding.” — Proverbs 4:7

God tells us that wisdom is an important quality.  Our highest and best life resources should be invested in getting it.

Wisdom comes to people who look for it.  It is all around us, waiting to be recognized, discovered and put to work.  Our task is to know where to look and how to identify it.  We have to raise our WQ.

How can we increase our WQ — our “Wisdom Quotient?”

Let’s take a look at the most common places and ways to find wisdom:

  • Look at God’s laws and commands.

God’s laws and commands are pure wisdom for us.  Knowing and obeying them makes us wise.  We do not have to understand them to benefit from their wisdom.

For example, parents command their young children to avoid dangerous heights well before the child understands the law of gravity.  The child is wise to obey, even when the command makes no sense to him.

When we know and obey God’s laws and commands we are living wisely.  Simple obedience, with or without understanding the “why” is a good decision that improves the quality of our life.

  • Look at God’s principles.

Imbedded in every law and command of God are principles.  For example, God says, “You shall not kill.” While God most certainly is forbidding murder, He is teaching us much more.  In this law God reveals to us something about Himself — He is a lover and protector of life.  The principle undergirding this law is the value of life.

Suddenly this law comes alive in a whole new way.  We realize that “killing” is not isolated to murder.  By gossip we can “kill” someone’s reputation.  By anger we can demean, demoralize and destroy someone’s spirit.  The law is all about the life principle.

Discovering and applying God’s principles leads to wise actions and right decisions.  How much better our lives would be if we lived by principles.

  • Look at the past.

While it is useless and counter-productive to live in the glories of the past or wallow in our regrets from the past, it is wise to learn from the past.  The past is a rich textbook of wisdom to those willing to productively and positively mine it’s gold.

What valuable lessons lie in the vault of your past waiting to instruct you in some present situation?

  • Look at people.

All around us are people with lessons to teach.  Some are wise, many are foolish, but both are rich with guidance for us.  When we learn from someone else’s success, we benefit.  When we learn from someone else’s mistakes and failures, we benefit.  Either way we are saved from much heartache, pain and time-consuming life detours.

The Bible is filled with stories of people, all ready to instruct us.  The local library or bookstore have shelves stocked and stacked with biographies and autobiographies revealing invaluable life lessons.  In your family, at church, at work and in your neighborhood wisdom is waiting for those who will look and learn from people.

Do you want to improve your life?  Grow you WQ.  Better decisions always lead to a better life!

Toma Mejores Decisiones

He aquí cómo: ¡Toma mejores decisiones!

Passionate!

Have you every wanted something so much that your desire practically became an obsession? You found that your thoughts, movements and decisions were all directed toward getting or achieving that “one thing.”

Certain desires, when felt deeply enough, drive us to action. These desires energize and motivate us to do things we would not normally do.

The Bible describes this kind of passion in David’s life. When he became king of Israel, his desire for God’s presence drove him to take immediate and determined action to put the presence of God in it’s rightful place among God’s people.

In those days, God’s presence was identified with the Ark of the Covenant. During Saul’s reign as Israel’s king, the ark was basically ignored by him. Saul had no passion for God’s presence. Putting the ark in a place of prominence and encouraging national focus on it never became a priority for him.

When David took the lead, this changed! One of David’s first acts after conquering and occupying Jerusalem was to get the ark and bring it into the city. David understood something that Saul never understood.  He knew the value and importance of giving place and priority to God’s presence. He was passionate about it. His desire for the presence of God drove him to action. God’s blessings came to David and his leadership because he had the right passion and priority.

We would do well to learn this lesson from David. God is attracted to people who are attracted to Him. God blesses people who put Him front and center in all they do. God smiles on those who go after “the ark!”

Is God’s presence a passionate pursuit in your life?

Heart Talk

Many times in Scripture we are reminded of the importance of keeping a constant guard over our mouths. One little word or phrase can have a huge impact, positively or negatively, on others.

Jesus gave us some startling insight into the importance of paying attention to our speech. He clearly linked the words we speak to the contents and condition of our hearts. In a strong rebuke of the scribes and Pharisees, who were very verbose religious leaders, Jesus said:

“You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks.“– Matthew 12:34

With this statement Jesus took the issue of what and how we communicate to a whole new level. He taught us that our words are a reflection and indication of real things in our hearts.

Think about the implications of this truth. If we really believed this, it could and would change our lives:

  • It would cause us to more closely monitor what we say.
  • It would help us get a better handle on the true contents and condition of our hearts.
  • It would help us choose friends more wisely.
  • It would help us understand the parts of our character that need to be refined.
  • It would be a great aid to our spiritual growth.

Try an experiment. Consciously “watch” what you say for a day. As various statements flow from your lips, take a moment and think about what was going on in your heart that motivated your words. Listen for angry words, sarcastic words, judgmental words, critical words, prideful words, unloving words, impatient words, jealous words, etc. What are your words really saying about your spiritual condition?

How much better our lives and relationships would be if we paid closer attention to the heart behind the things we say!
